Sober worm offshoot trades on Paris Hilton, FBI

There is no Easter Bunny, and that's not a real Paris Hilton video in your e-mail box. Nor is the FBI likely to be e-mailing you to ask you questions about visiting illegal Web sites.

A new variant of the Sober worm made the network rounds Tuesday in the United States, attempting to entice people into clicking on attachments purporting to be threats from the law enforcement agency or videos clips of the hotel heiress and her reality TV co-star Nicole Richie.

Antivirus companies said the worm gained some traction over the weekend and on Monday. It's a minor modification of the "Sober" virus that has flared up several times over the past year. But this latest variant, graded as a medium-level threat, appeared to be trailing off as security providers have responded.

"This one is virulent and will reproduce itself easily but does not have much of a payload," said David Perry, the global director of education at antivirus company Trend Micro. "For the time being, this particular strain is probably done."

One version of the e-mail carrying the worm appears to be a letter from the FBI saying the agency has found evidence that the computer user has been visiting illegal Web sites. It asks the recipient to click on the attachment to answer questions.

The FBI released a warning on Tuesday saying it never sends unsolicited e-mails.

"The FBI takes this matter seriously and is investigating," the agency said in its statement. "Users are instructed to delete the e-mail without opening it."

Another version of the e-mail used a message purporting to be from the Central Intelligence Agency. A third, a German-language variant, contained a threatening message from a German law enforcement agency.

A separate version purports to offer a download manager for "video clips, pictures and more" of Hilton and Richie. All operate the same way, once the attachment is activated, however.

If activated, the worm drops several files onto a computer and searches for e-mail addresses stored in address books or elsewhere in memory and sends copies of itself to those destinations. If it finds Microsoft's anti-spyware and antivirus software running, it turns the protections off.

Several other variants of a different virus, dubbed "Mytob," are also making the rounds. The e-mails carrying them purport to be a message from an e-mail service provider or from support staff providing notification about a changed password or suspended account.

Antivirus companies rate the danger of this worm as "low," but as always, advise against clicking on unknown attachments to e-mails.

She also dismissed her daughter's sex tape scandal as an "unfortunate incident", and added: "I'm so proud of Paris. People think of her as this sexy goddess but she's just a sweet girl.

"She works very hard."

Kathy also said Paris broke off her engagment with Paris Latsis because she had "cold feet", adding that she believed her daughter was too young to get hitched.

However, she did not rule out that the pair would get back together again.

Paris Hilton and tycoon boyfriend in fender-bender fleeing paparazzi

Paris Hilton's Greek shipping heir beau bumped a costly car into a parked truck while blindly driving away from paparazzi outside a Hollywood nightclub, according to a video recording.

In the wake of the 2:30 am PDT fender-bender, Los Angeles police were investigating whether two officers properly handled their response to the incident.

Video by TMZ.com entertainment shows Stavros Niarchos in the driver's seat of a Bentley, surrounded by paparazzi.

Hilton and Kimberly Stewart, daughter of singer Rod Stewart, were in the luxury car, along with MTV star Talan Torriero.

Niarchos yanked a jacket over his head, then drove the 175,000-dollar Bentley into the back of a truck from a movie company crew filming in the neighborhood, according to the video.

The hood of the Bentley was damaged.

After a few seconds, the car backed up then sped away, narrowly missing a bystander.

TMZ cameras later filmed police officers with the stopped Bentley and the occupants standing outside the automobile.

Torriero says, "I'm the only sober one, let's just go," and offers to drive, according to the video.

Paris thanked the police officers, who let the celebrity bad-girl and her companions go. Hilton blew the officers a kiss and says, "We love the police."

TMZ noted that no sobriety tests were conducted.

"After reviewing the tape, I can see where there could be some concerns about the appropriateness of the officers' actions," Hollywood-area police captain Michael Moriarty said in a television news interview.

"There will be an investigation into that to determine if they acted appropriately or not."

Police Lt. Paul Vernon confirmed that the officers' actions were being investigated, but noted there was no report of an accident and that it wasn't clear whether there were legal grounds to perform sobriety checks.

"If an officer can't place a person behind the wheel, they won't be able to arrest anyone for driving under the influence," Vernon said.

Video showed Hilton on the lap of a man in the front seat of the stopped Bentley and an officer making her sit properly in the car, Vernon said.

"The person driving is not the same person who was driving when the car hit the truck. He walked away. The accident did not happen in the officers' presence,'' Vernon said.

Hilton's publicist could not be reached for comment.

Paris Hilton 'only victim' of crash: spokesman

Celebrity heiress Paris Hilton, whose Bentley was damaged in a videotaped crash that spawned an Internet sensation and a police investigation, was the "only victim" of the incident, her spokesman said on Thursday.

The videotape released by celebrity Web site TMZ.com shows Hilton's companion, Greek shipping heir Stavros Niarchos, slamming her luxury car into a truck as the couple left a Hollywood nightclub with at least two other people.

The car is then seen speeding away from the scene with a scratched hood and Niarchos at the wheel as bystanders and celebrity photographers scatter. Later, Niarchos is shown speaking to Los Angeles police officers who have pulled him over.

The officers then allowed Niarchos and Hilton to leave with their friends, identified by TMZ.com as rocker Rod Stewart's daughter, Kimberly Stewart, and Talan Torriero, star of naked MTV's reality show "Laguna Beach."

Torriero is heard telling his friends, "I'm the only sober one, lets just go." Hilton, star of the popular Fox reality show "The Simple Life," blows a kiss to one of the policemen and is heard saying, "Thank you officer -- we love the police," before she steps into the car.

The Los Angeles Police Department said it has opened an investigation to determine whether the officers should have detained Niarchos, a student at the University of Southern California, to determine if he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

"At the end of the day what seems to be going on here is that Paris is the only victim," Hilton publicist Elliot Mintz told Reuters. "She's going to be stuck with the tab of repairing that car."

Mintz added: "It's all very upsetting (for Hilton) as you might imagine. But the important thing is that no one was injured."

It's claimed a tape of Britney and Kevin getting jiggy with it has been stolen by one of the couple's entourage.

The made-for-the-tabloids romance of
Paris Hilton and Paris Latsis has flamed out.

Following weeks of speculation that their relationship was on the fritz, Hilton gave a brief statement to Us Weekly Friday announcing she and Latsis have scuttled wedding plans.

"I'm sad to announce that I've called off my engagement. Over the last couple months I've realized that this is the right decision for me. We remain best of friends, and I'll always love him," she said. "I hope people will respect my privacy during this emotional time."

There was no immediate comment from the publicity-shy Latsis.

The hotel heiress, 24, and the Greek shipping heir, 26, hooked up late last year. By May, they were happily engaged, with Hilton even contemplating giving up her life as a celebutante and vowing to "retire" to start a family with same-named beau.

"I'm so in love and grateful to have found such an honest and loyal person," the heiress crowed to Us Weekly shortly after their betrothal. "I feel like we were meant to be, and I'm happy to have found someone to spend the rest of my life with."

To People she said, "I want to have kids in the next two years, because I know that completes your life."

The couple jetted off to Greece to scout wedding locations earlier this summer. But after their return, she was spotted sans her 24-carat, $5 million engagement ring, sparking talk that there was trouble in paradise.

The rumor mill went into overdrive last week, when Latsis' father, Grigoris Kasidokostas, was quoted in Star magazine saying, "There does seem to be some problem [between them]. I understand that they are not as close as they used to be.

"Both his mother and I agree that our son is far too young to contemplate marriage and children. Our son agreed with us. There was an unanimity on this issue."

At the time, Hilton denied any problems.

News of the split could throw a monkey wrench in Fox's plans for a new season of The Simple Life. With Hilton already on the outs with costar
Nicole Richie, Fox had been toying with the idea of separately following Hilton and Richie and they planned their weddings. (Richie's union with Adam Goldstein, aka DJ AM, is still a go.) Fox has declined to comment on the show's future.

To keep her mind off the breakup, Hilton will continue to work with producer Scott Storch on her long-delayed album for Warner Bros. She also has two films in the pipeline, National Lampoon's Pledge This!, due out this year, and Bottom's Up, coming in 2006.

After September 11th, 2001, it was a source of some embarrassment that nakednews.com had to stop operations for a few days. The viewers realized that maybe their grip on politics was not what it should be and that at least for that moment, nakednews.com would not do. By the end of 2003, the pornography consumer openly ditched politics for Paris Hilton.

The next image from all this that comes to mind is a military juggernaut moving forward and crushing all underfoot, while most of the staff of the juggernaut pays no attention, because it is too busy with pornography. The Amerikkkan military can accomplish quite a bit with some degree of efficiency even while most of the country continues in its oblivious and privileged existence.

It is actually a return to "normalcy" that less than three years later, Bush captures Saddam Hussein and the under-40 crowd changes the channel to Paris Hilton. That is a huge political watershed moment. It's tempting to say that when Amerikkkans are watching their porno videos at least they are not lapping up Bush-league propaganda. The government has tried so often to link Saddam Hussein and his sons to unrestrained sexual appetites indulged in luxury pads that then become the subject of tabloid story after tabloid story. Yet, now it is difficult to tell if this was just a way of getting the attention of readers. There is obviously good money to be made in telling and re-telling the stories of the sex lives of men who supposedly procured wimmin at will.

CBS reported it this way: "Last year, Comcast, the nation's largest cable company, pulled in $50 million from adult programming. All the nation's top cable operators, from Time Warner to Cablevision, distribute sexually explicit material to their subscribers. But you won't read about it in their annual reports. Same with satellite providers like EchoStar and DirecTV, which is owned by Hughes Technology, a subsidiary of General Motors."(2) It appears that DirecTV would be in the red without pornography of about $500 million in revenue a year.

By coincidence, at the end of 2003, the bourgeois media did some thorough news stories that show how pornography gained mainstream acceptance in the United $tates. At $10 billion a year in business, the porno business is equal to the music industry or the non-porno big-screen industry.(2) Especially noteworthy is how pornography videos are the key to some cable television and hotel profits--not in the adult entertainment production industry, but in "mainstream" businesses catering to pornography consumers.

The days are long gone when it was useful to think of pornography as some "deviant lifestyle" to be corrected by pre-political lifestyle practices such as advised by Christian preachers. Many of the largest corporations in Amerika would be sunk without pornography. "Hilton, Marriot [sic], Hyatt, Sheraton and Holiday Inn [...] all offer adult films on in-room pay-per-view television systems. And they are purchased by a whopping 50 percent of their guests, accounting for nearly 70 percent of their in-room profits. One hotel owner said, 'We have to have it, our guests demand it.'"(2)

That level of economic organization is not something that a trip down to the local synagogue or Christian church is going to take care of. Capitalism is another reason that gender oppression is a system, not a lifestyle. If one cable company or hotel tried to do the "right thing," another would come along and make the profits from doing the "wrong thing." Hence, no single individual's choice really matters in a profit-system.

The pornography industry now lobbies the California legislature, and among other things, lobbyists point out that adult entertainment brings California 12,000 jobs.(2) For that matter, all other entertainers have to compete; thus, Britney Spears and the "Friends" television show have made obliging references.(2) To restrict our view of pornography's influence to the direct employees of adult entertainment companies would be a big mistake.

The biggest possible blow to pornography is not the same old religion, Christian, Muslim or any other. Those religions have been around for thousands of years without contributing to the solution of the oppression of wimmin. The biggest blow to pornography will come with socialist revolution. When it is legally impossible to make profits or spend ill-gotten money, it is pornography and drugs that will suffer most. Mao already proved that by successfully abolishing thriving drug, prostitution and pornography trades in China (1949-1976). Taking away someone's "right" to make profits from pornography is indeed an act of dictatorship at this stage in history and until the day no one would think of making money that way. That's why people who want an end to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, prostitution, drugs and pornography should support the dictatorship of the proletariat.
